Catfish farming is a major global industry where welfare consideration lags far behind production scale. These sensory-sophisticated fish — using chemoreception, electroreception, and lateral line sensing in addition to vision — live in environments designed for yield, not behavioral welfare. High stocking density in earthen ponds limits individual movement and increases competitive interactions; low water quality from poor management causes gill damage and chronic stress. Harvest handling — involving seine netting, crowding, and extended air exposure — causes severe acute stress. Electrical stunning before slaughter, where practiced, significantly reduces suffering; boiling or CO2 exposure alive are welfare-poor alternatives. Consumer and regulatory pressure for minimum welfare standards in catfish production — including water quality monitoring, stocking density limits, and mandatory stunning — is an important advocacy gap to address.
