Unlike cultivated meat (which requires animal cell lines maintained through biopsies) or plant-based alternatives (which require consumer acceptance of product substitution), fermentation-derived dairy proteins are chemically identical to their conventional counterparts and require no animals whatsoever beyond the initial genetic sequence. If cost parity is achieved and consumer acceptance grows, the welfare implication is enormous: elimination of the dairy farming welfare costs borne by approximately 270 million cows globally.
