Stocking density in farmed salmon sea cages is one of the most significant determinants of welfare. High density drives aggression, disease, and chronic stress that impair fish health and quality.
Salmon stocking density is the most practical and controllable welfare parameter in sea cage aquaculture. The evidence is clear: above approximately 20-25 kg per cubic metre, welfare indicators deteriorate across multiple metrics — fin damage, cortisol levels, disease burden, and feeding success all worsen with increasing density. Producers who voluntarily maintain lower densities report fewer disease outbreaks and better fish condition, suggesting that the welfare-optimal density is also the production-optimal density when the full cost of disease treatment and mortality is accounted for. The barrier to lower-density production is short-term revenue optimisation: more fish per cage means more product per capital invested. Regulatory maximums that reflect welfare evidence, combined with welfare-indexed pricing that rewards lower density production, create the incentive structure needed for industry-wide improvement.
