Barramundi (Asian sea bass) is a major tropical aquaculture species farmed across Southeast Asia and Australia. Its welfare needs are poorly studied despite significant production scale.
Barramundi welfare suffers from the same research deficit that characterises most tropical aquaculture species: production has scaled rapidly ahead of welfare science. These active, predatory fish require adequate space to express territorial behaviour without constant conflict; high stocking densities drive persistent aggression and the fin damage that creates chronic pain and infection risk. Slaughter by asphyxiation or stunning with CO2 — the most common methods — causes distress that electrical stunning would eliminate. The development of welfare standards for barramundi production, including stocking density limits and mandatory pre-slaughter stunning, is an achievable near-term regulatory goal. Consumer and retailer pressure, particularly in the Australian market where barramundi welfare awareness is growing, can drive earlier adoption than regulation alone.
