Capture-based research — the traditional approach — imposes acute welfare costs on every individual processed; non-invasive alternatives eliminate these costs while often providing richer data over longer periods. Camera trap networks provide continuous behavioural observation across hundreds of individuals simultaneously; faecal hormone analysis reveals population-level stress trends without disturbance; acoustic monitoring detects species presence and vocalisation patterns that reveal behavioural and social welfare indicators. These technologies are enabling a new generation of wild animal welfare research that would have been impossible using traditional methods, creating the evidence base needed to understand and address wild animal welfare at population scale.
