Chimpanzees present some of the most demanding welfare challenges in zoos because their behavioral and cognitive needs are so complex. Inadequate social structure, insufficient space, and monotonous environments cause genuine psychological suffering evidenced by hair-plucking, coprophagy, and rocking. High-quality enrichment programs address multiple welfare dimensions simultaneously: foraging enrichment reduces boredom and promotes natural behavior, social management decisions affect stress levels and relationship quality, and cognitive challenges support mental engagement. Research has shown that chimpanzees given regular novel enrichment have lower cortisol levels and higher positive affect indicators than those in impoverished environments.
