Zebrafish and other fish species are increasingly used in biomedical research. Their welfare requirements and capacity for suffering deserve the same scientific attention as mammalian research subjects.
Laboratory fish represent a significant welfare challenge because they are often viewed as simpler organisms than mammals, leading to less rigorous welfare oversight. Yet the evidence increasingly supports that fish experience pain and distress in ways that matter morally. Zebrafish are particularly important because they are used in enormous numbers, often in poorly enriched tanks, with handling stress that is rarely managed with the same care applied to rodents. The refinement principle of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) applies as much to fish as to mammals, yet refinement protocols specifically designed for zebrafish are far less developed than for mice or rats. Closing this gap is one of the most impactful opportunities in laboratory animal welfare.
