Narwhals are among the most specialized Arctic cetaceans. Their welfare is threatened by sea ice loss, increased shipping traffic, and continued hunting. Their extreme specialization makes them particularly vulnerable to change.
Narwhal welfare is challenging to assess because these animals are extremely difficult to study in their remote, ice-covered habitat. What is known suggests significant welfare concerns from increasing human pressures: ship noise causes documented stress responses including cardiac changes and altered diving behavior, and entrapment events cause drowning deaths that represent acute suffering at scale. The extreme specialization of narwhals to Arctic sea ice conditions means that climate-driven changes may create welfare crises faster than for more adaptable species. The limited research that exists on narwhal stress physiology suggests they are highly reactive to disturbance, which compounds concerns about increasing Arctic development.
