Sea lice are the most significant health and welfare challenge in Atlantic salmon farming. Management strategies including cleaner fish, laser systems, and breeding for resistance are transforming the industry.
Sea lice welfare is a multilayered problem: the lice cause direct suffering to salmon through skin damage and physiological stress, while treatments for lice frequently cause additional welfare impacts including respiratory distress from chemical treatments. The welfare-optimal outcome is prevention through breeding for resistance and closed containment systems, rather than repeated treatment of infestations. Biological control using cleaner fish is ecologically preferable to chemicals but raises welfare questions about the cleaner fish themselves, particularly wrasse and lumpfish held at high densities as living lice-removal tools. The interaction between salmon farm lice and wild fish populations adds a third welfare dimension, as infected wild salmon and trout suffer from lice transmitted from farm populations.
