Digital and mechanical innovations are transforming zoo enrichment programs. Interactive touchscreens, automated feeders, and environmental control systems provide richer, more responsive environments for captive animals.
Technology enrichment addresses two fundamental limitations of traditional zoo enrichment: the time burden on keepers required to prepare and rotate enrichment, and the predictability of human-prepared enrichment that animals quickly habituate to. When an animal can trigger varied responses from its environment through its own actions, it experiences the sense of control and agency that is fundamentally important to psychological wellbeing. AI-based behavioral monitoring is particularly promising because it enables continuous welfare assessment rather than periodic snapshot observations, allowing welfare decline to be detected and addressed before it becomes severe. The challenge is ensuring that technology supplements rather than replaces the human-animal relationships that are also important to captive animal welfare.
