Positive Welfare: Moving Beyond Suffering Prevention

Modern animal welfare science is expanding beyond preventing suffering to promoting positive experiences. This positive welfare framework changes how we evaluate animal lives and design their environments.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The shift from welfare-as-suffering-prevention to welfare-as-flourishing represents the most important conceptual advance in animal welfare science in recent decades. The traditional Five Freedoms framework, while valuable, is framed almost entirely in terms of freedoms from negative states. A life free from hunger, thirst, discomfort, pain, fear, and distress may still be impoverished if it contains no opportunities for positive experiences: play, social bonding, exploration, problem-solving, and the satisfaction of natural behavioral drives. Positive welfare science is providing tools to assess and promote these positive states, moving the benchmark from mere acceptability to genuine flourishing. This is a more ambitious and ethically demanding standard, but it is the correct one if we take animal wellbeing seriously.
