Dairy cow lameness is one of the most significant and consistently underaddressed welfare failures in modern animal agriculture. A lame cow experiences chronic pain with every step, spends more time lying down to avoid weight-bearing, has reduced feed access because she cannot compete at the feed bunk, and suffers reproductive failure from the metabolic stress of chronic pain. Yet farms routinely maintain lameness prevalences of 25-50% without intervention, partly because lameness is so common it appears normal, and partly because treatment requires labor investment that many operations lack. The welfare case for proactive lameness prevention through hoof trimming, flooring improvement, and early detection is also the economic case: lame cows cost farms thousands of dollars in lost production.
