Enrichment programs are only as effective as the assessment methods used to evaluate them. Systematic behavioral observation, welfare indicator tracking, and evidence-based refinement distinguish excellent from token enrichment.
Enrichment assessment is the difference between a genuinely welfare-improving program and a welfare theater that provides visible enrichment objects without systematic evaluation of behavioral benefit. Zoo enrichment programs that use evidence-based behavioral assessment are able to identify which enrichment types produce the greatest behavioral benefit, which individuals are not engaging with provided enrichment, and when enrichment programs have become ineffective through habituation. Without assessment, enrichment can actually become counterproductive by giving the appearance of welfare provision while masking real welfare deficits that would otherwise prompt intervention. The goal of enrichment assessment is continuous improvement rather than compliance.
