Snow leopard welfare in captivity requires managing animals evolved for vast, remote, cold mountain landscapes in zoo exhibits that cannot replicate these conditions fully. The welfare challenges are specific: thermoregulation in warm climates requires active management through cooling systems and shade; social management must account for their largely solitary nature; and exhibit terrain must provide the elevation and ruggedness that these agile climbers need for natural locomotion. Well-managed snow leopard programs at facilities in appropriate cold climates provide significantly better welfare than those in warm southern facilities, suggesting that geographic location of facilities matters for welfare alongside exhibit design.
