Aquaculture welfare research has grown rapidly in the past decade, establishing a scientific foundation for improved standards in fish and shellfish farming.
Aquaculture welfare research faces unique challenges compared to terrestrial animal welfare science. Fish and invertebrates are evolutionarily distant from humans, making behavioral and physiological indicators of suffering harder to interpret. However, the convergence of evidence from neuroscience, behavior, and physiology has substantially advanced the field. There is now broad scientific consensus that at minimum, salmon and other teleost fish have the biological capacity for pain and negative affective states. Welfare-focused aquaculture research has identified practical interventions — optimized stocking densities, water quality parameters, enriched environments for some species, and humane slaughter methods — that reduce suffering without prohibitive cost increases. The challenge now is translating research into regulatory standards and industry practice. Certification schemes like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council are beginning to incorporate welfare metrics, though advocacy groups argue current standards remain insufficient given the scale of the industry.
