The transition away from conventional battery cages, now complete in the EU and underway in many US states, has been driven substantially by this welfare science. However, the next frontier is optimizing welfare within cage-free systems, which are not uniformly welfare-positive: large commercial cage-free barns can have significant problems with pecking, disease, and resource competition if not carefully managed.
