Wildlife corridors serve both individual and population welfare. For individual animals, corridors reduce road mortality (a direct welfare harm), allow access to wider foraging areas that reduce nutritional stress, and enable natural dispersal to new territories rather than forced existence in overcrowded, resource-depleted patches. For populations, corridors maintain genetic diversity that reduces the welfare costs of inbreeding — a significant problem in small, isolated populations — and allow populations to shift their range in response to climate change. Corridor planning must account for the specific requirements of target species: a corridor effective for deer may be insufficient for wolves or mountain lions that require greater width and less human disturbance.
