Amphibians are experiencing the most severe mass extinction event in vertebrate history, driven largely by chytrid fungus. The welfare implications of this crisis are profound and poorly recognized.
Amphibian welfare in the context of the chytrid crisis involves both population-level conservation urgency and individual animal welfare during disease, captive management, and reintroduction. Individual amphibians affected by chytridiomycosis experience a form of distress measurable through physiological indicators — reduced locomotion, altered skin secretions, and abnormal posture — before death from cardiac arrest. While amphibian sentience is less thoroughly studied than vertebrate sentience, their evolutionary history and neural organization suggests capacity for at least basic nociception and stress responses. The welfare case for chytrid management is reinforced by conservation arguments: protecting amphibian populations from disease protects the ecological services they provide (including insect control and serving as prey for higher trophic levels) and prevents irreplaceable species extinctions. Ex situ conservation programs that maintain amphibians in captivity carry welfare obligations to provide appropriate environments and veterinary care.
