The welfare benefit of early detection is significant: many welfare problems that cause prolonged suffering — lameness, mastitis, respiratory disease — show early behavioral or physiological indicators that are detectable by sensors before they reach clinical severity. Catching these problems earlier means earlier treatment, shorter duration of suffering, and better recovery outcomes. The limitation of current PLF approaches is the gap between data generation and welfare-improving action: a sensor that detects a lame cow provides no welfare benefit unless the farmer responds appropriately and promptly. The most welfare-effective implementations integrate PLF data with clear action thresholds and supported decision-making that translates alerts into interventions. As these technologies become cheaper and more validated, their integration into welfare certification schemes could provide the continuous, objective monitoring that current inspection-based systems cannot achieve.
