Genetic diversity is a welfare variable that operates at population level but manifests in individual animal suffering. An inbred dog with hip dysplasia, a panther with a malformed heart, or a zoo animal with reduced immune function are all experiencing welfare consequences of genetic impoverishment — suffering that would not occur with adequate genetic diversity. The welfare implications of inbreeding are well-documented and the solutions are well-understood in principle, even when difficult to implement in practice. For domestic animals, responsible breeding practices including genetic health testing, avoiding popular sire overuse, and maintaining breed population effective size above critical minimums can prevent the most severe inbreeding problems. For wild animals, habitat connectivity — maintaining corridors between populations — is the most sustainable long-term solution, as it allows natural genetic exchange that prevents inbreeding depression without the logistical challenges of managed genetic rescue.
