Shifting toward plant-based diets is one of the most impactful individual actions for reducing animal suffering. Understanding the scale of impact helps motivate and guide dietary choices.
Plant-based dietary choices have direct, quantifiable impacts on animal welfare that make them one of the most evidence-supported individual interventions available. The arithmetic is straightforward: fewer animal products purchased means fewer animals produced means fewer animals suffering in production systems. The welfare logic applies most strongly to factory-farmed products where conditions are worst and numbers are largest. Reducing or eliminating chicken, farmed fish, and eggs has the greatest per-meal numerical welfare impact due to the number of individual animals involved. Reducing beef has a smaller numerical impact per meal but large environmental co-benefits. The most welfare-effective dietary approach combines significant reduction in the highest-welfare-impact products with substitution by diverse plant-based alternatives rather than substitution of one animal product for another.
