Large carnivores require vast, connected landscapes to maintain viable populations with good welfare. Fragmentation causes isolation, inbreeding, and conflict that compromise both welfare and conservation.
Landscape connectivity for large carnivores is simultaneously an individual welfare intervention and a population-level conservation tool. For individual animals, wildlife crossings reduce road mortality, allow access to mates, and reduce the stress of attempted — and often failed — crossing attempts. For populations, connectivity prevents the inbreeding and genetic erosion that create chronic welfare problems in isolated groups. The return on investment for wildlife crossing infrastructure is measurable: documented reductions in road mortality, genetic rescue of isolated populations, and expansion of species range all produce welfare and conservation benefits that justify substantial infrastructure investment. The policy challenge is that benefits are diffuse and invisible — a mountain lion that successfully uses a wildlife crossing does not make headlines the way a road-killed mountain lion does — requiring proactive advocacy to maintain political support for corridor funding.
