Horses in competitive sports face unique welfare challenges including training pressure, transport stress, performance-enhancing drug use, and the risk of catastrophic injury. Reform efforts are accelerating across disciplines.
The relationship between horses and equestrian sport is deeply complex. At its best, horsemanship involves genuine partnership, mutual understanding, and physical fitness. At its worst, it involves exploitation, pain-masking drugs, rough training methods, and disposal of horses when they are no longer useful. The welfare of sport horses depends on robust regulatory frameworks, transparent drug testing, low-stress training approaches, and serious attention to post-career rehoming. The equestrian community has significant capacity to self-regulate, but external accountability through regulation and public transparency is increasingly necessary.
