Breed standards set by kennel clubs and breed organizations exert enormous influence over dog welfare by defining which physical traits are rewarded, with significant welfare implications for exaggerated conformations.
Breed standards are not merely aesthetic preferences but welfare documents with profound real-world consequences. Standards that reward flat faces, excessive skin folds, extremely short legs, or abnormal spinal proportions create selection pressure toward conformations that cause chronic suffering in the resulting dogs. The animals bred to standard do not choose their body plans but live with the respiratory, dermatological, and orthopedic consequences for their entire lives. Reforming breed standards to explicitly prioritize health and functional anatomy over exaggerated visual traits is one of the highest-leverage welfare interventions available in companion animal welfare, as it prevents suffering from being built into the breed rather than treating it after the fact.
