New technologies including GPS tracking, camera traps, eDNA analysis, and AI monitoring are transforming conservation. When designed well, these tools reduce the handling stress that traditional monitoring causes.
Conservation technology has a welfare dimension that is often overlooked. Every camera trap that replaces a live trap, every eDNA sample that replaces a physical capture, and every GPS re-sighting that replaces a recapture represents a welfare gain for individual animals. Developing and promoting monitoring methods that achieve conservation objectives while minimizing animal handling is a genuine welfare contribution. The animal welfare and conservation communities share interest in these technologies and should collaborate more explicitly on their development and deployment.
