Rewilding programs that restore natural predator-prey dynamics and ecological processes improve welfare across entire ecosystems by reducing the chronic suffering caused by ecological dysfunction.
The welfare case for rewilding is complex but compelling. Natural predation causes obvious individual suffering, but its absence creates chronic population-level welfare problems: overgrazing that degrades habitat, density-dependent disease spread, and physiological stress from resource competition. Restoring predator-prey dynamics does not eliminate animal suffering but replaces chronic, diffuse suffering from ecological dysfunction with acute suffering that performs the ecological function of selecting for healthy populations. This is not a perfect welfare outcome, but it may represent a net reduction in total wild animal suffering at ecosystem scale compared to the alternative of degraded, predator-free ecosystems.
