Dairy technology is neither inherently welfare-positive nor welfare-negative — the outcome depends on the values embedded in design and implementation choices. Robotic milking that gives cows autonomy over when to be milked represents a genuine welfare advance. Automated systems that restrict movement for production efficiency represent welfare regression under a technology veneer. The challenge for welfare advocates is not to oppose technology but to insist that welfare outcomes are measured and reported alongside production metrics, and that technology implementations are evaluated honestly against both standards. Technology can deliver the best dairy welfare outcomes ever achieved, if those outcomes are genuinely what is being optimized for.
