The cognitive complexity of pigs is one of the best-documented facts in animal behavior science — and one of the most consequential for farm welfare. Pigs in bare concrete pens experience profound behavioral deprivation that drives some of the worst welfare problems in intensive pig farming: tail biting, ear biting, and severe aggression. These are not inevitable behaviors but responses to frustrated behavioral needs. Providing rooting substrate (straw, compost, hay), manipulable objects, and social enrichment dramatically reduces these problems. The economic case for enrichment is increasingly clear — reduced tail biting alone saves significant veterinary and management costs. Yet many farms still provide only legally minimum enrichment. Moving beyond compliance to genuine cognitive engagement is the welfare frontier for pigs.
