Aquatic turtles are widely kept as pets but their welfare needs are poorly understood by many owners. Proper habitat, nutrition, and veterinary care are essential for their wellbeing.
Aquatic turtle welfare suffers from a fundamental information gap: turtles are perceived as low-maintenance pets when they actually require complex, expensive care for decades. The result is widespread metabolic bone disease from inadequate UV-B, respiratory infections from inappropriate temperatures, organ failure from poor water quality, and widespread abandonment when owners discover the true care requirements. Unlike mammals, turtles do not visibly show pain or illness until disease is advanced — meaning welfare problems accumulate silently. Appropriate aquatic turtle care requires large enclosures (10+ gallons per inch of shell length), powerful filtration, UV-B lighting, proper basking temperature gradients, and veterinary care from a reptile-specialist. The long lifespan of these animals demands a decades-long commitment that most impulse buyers are unprepared for.
