The gap between enrichment science and farm practice represents a significant unsolved welfare challenge. Research has clearly established which enrichment materials best satisfy pig behavioral motivations, but this knowledge has not been uniformly translated into farm practice. Organic materials preferred by pigs create management challenges — biosecurity concerns, labor for provision and renewal, and cost considerations — that chains from supermarket shelves to welfare certification bodies and farmers need to address cooperatively. Digital enrichment technologies including automated puzzle systems and touchscreens represent an emerging pathway that may overcome some practical barriers while providing cognitive engagement. The welfare opportunity is clear; closing the science-practice gap requires systems-level engagement.
