The most meaningful welfare improvements for laying hens require access to outdoor vegetation (for dust bathing, foraging, and perching), appropriate stocking densities that allow normal social dynamics, and management that addresses the specific welfare challenges of each system. Consumer certification based on outcome measures rather than system labels would provide more reliable welfare guarantees.
