Horse Hoof Care and Lameness Prevention

Hoof health is fundamental to horse welfare. Regular farriery, appropriate shoeing decisions, and surface management prevent the lameness that affects millions of horses.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Hoof care and lameness prevention are foundational to horse welfare — without sound feet, horses cannot move comfortably, graze freely, or express natural behavior. The systemic underprovision of appropriate hoof care is a widespread welfare problem: many horses receive farriery too infrequently, with inappropriate shoeing choices, or without adequate attention to the dietary and management factors that predispose laminitis. Laminitis in particular deserves attention as a major welfare issue: the condition causes severe pain through inflammation of the sensitive laminae that attach the hoof wall to the pedal bone, and can result in pedal bone rotation — a catastrophic and painful injury. Prevention through diet management, weight control, and early intervention for endocrine conditions (Cushing disease, Equine Metabolic Syndrome) is far more welfare-positive than treating established laminitis.
