Feline dental prevention is most effective when started early — ideally before dental disease has established. Kittens introduced to tooth brushing through gradual desensitization develop tolerance for the procedure that allows lifelong preventive care. The earlier this training begins, the more effective it becomes as a welfare intervention over the cat's lifetime. For cats where brushing is not achievable, evidence-based alternatives — water additives containing zinc ascorbate or chlorhexidine, VOHC-approved dental chews, and dental diets — provide meaningful though less effective prevention.
