Stocking density in aquaculture is one of the primary determinants of fish welfare, yet minimum space requirements for many species are based on production efficiency rather than behavioral or physiological welfare research.
The relationship between stocking density and fish welfare is well-established for Atlantic salmon: higher densities produce measurable physiological and behavioral stress responses. The challenge is translating this research into universal standards across the hundreds of species now farmed globally. Tropical species, freshwater species, and marine species have radically different social structures and density tolerances. Some species are naturally highly aggregating and tolerate high densities well; others are territorial and show injury at low densities if poorly managed. Welfare-based density standards require species-specific research that the industry has historically been unwilling to fund. Third-party certification programs are increasingly requiring density standards informed by welfare science.
