The transition from battery cages to cage-free housing represents a genuine welfare improvement — hens can express more of their natural behavioral repertoire including nest-seeking before laying, perching, and dust-bathing. However, cage-free does not mean welfare-positive by default. High-density barn systems can have poor air quality, high disease transmission rates, and significant feather pecking. The welfare quality within cage-free systems varies enormously based on stocking density, litter management, lighting, and enrichment provision. True free-range systems with meaningful outdoor access provide the strongest welfare outcomes among commercial alternatives. The challenge is ensuring that corporate cage-free commitments translate into actual welfare improvements rather than merely meeting a technical housing criterion without addressing underlying welfare drivers.
