Alpaca welfare challenges parallel those of other camelids — social animals whose stoic nature conceals suffering until it becomes severe. Annual shearing is a welfare necessity but the procedure itself causes stress, and rough or inexpert shearing causes additional pain and injury. Dental disease develops gradually and is often missed until nutritional consequences become visible. Because alpacas are a specialty livestock species, veterinary expertise is less accessible than for common livestock, making owner education and proactive management particularly important. Certification programs for fair-trade and welfare-assured alpaca fiber are emerging but inconsistently implemented. Consumer awareness of alpaca welfare provides market incentive for better standards.
