CDS creates welfare harm through the disorientation and anxiety that accompany neurological decline. Affected dogs may vocalize at night from confusion, become anxious in familiar environments, or show distress from their reduced ability to navigate and recognize familiar people. The welfare challenge is recognizing CDS as a medical condition requiring management rather than attributing signs to normal aging that cannot be addressed. Early diagnosis and intervention — pharmaceutical, dietary, and enrichment-based — can slow progression and improve quality of life during the extended period that CDS affects senior dogs. Night vocalization responds to evening light provision and short evening walks. Anxiolytic medication can reduce the distress component of cognitive decline. Environmental simplification reduces confusion in dogs struggling with spatial navigation.
