Wild boar management creates difficult welfare dilemmas because control methods frequently cause significant suffering while population reduction efforts struggle to overcome high reproductive rates. Hunting is the primary management tool but inflicts acute suffering on individual animals and may not achieve population targets when practiced selectively. Wounded animals that escape hunters face prolonged pain and death. Trapping methods vary widely in humaneness, with snare traps causing particular welfare concerns. Fertility control through vaccination (porcine zona pellucida vaccines) is biologically feasible but logistically challenging to deploy at scale. Boar farrow in secure nest structures and are strongly motivated to protect piglets, meaning disruption of family groups causes acute stress.
