The welfare of commercially farmed turkeys is compromised at nearly every stage of their short lives. Genetic selection for extreme breast meat yield has created birds whose skeletal systems cannot adequately support their body weight, leading to chronic pain from leg deformities and difficulty accessing feed and water. Overcrowded sheds cause respiratory disease, skin burns from ammonia-soaked litter, and social stress. The inability to express natural behaviors including dust bathing, perching, foraging, and flight responses creates chronic frustration. Stunning and slaughter methods carry significant welfare risks, with electrical waterbath stunning frequently failing to render birds fully unconscious before slaughter. Slower-growing heritage breeds represent a meaningful welfare improvement but remain a tiny fraction of production.
