RAS represents a genuine step forward for fish welfare because it removes many of the environmental stressors that conventional open-water farming cannot control. Stable optimal water temperature, precise dissolved oxygen management, elimination of parasite pressure, and absence of weather-driven water quality deterioration create conditions far closer to the optimal thermal and chemical range for each species. The welfare advantages are most dramatic for sea lice elimination since lice infestations are one of the most significant welfare harms in conventional salmon farming. However, RAS introduces its own welfare considerations: high stocking density remains a choice rather than an environmental constraint, mechanical equipment failures can cause rapid oxygen depletion emergencies, and the absence of natural current means fish must receive artificial current stimulation through engineered water flow. RAS welfare auditing should incorporate continuous water quality monitoring and emergency response protocols.
