The transition from gestation stalls to group housing represents a major welfare improvement for sows but introduces new management challenges that must be addressed to realize the welfare gains. Gestation stalls cause welfare harm through complete prevention of movement, exploration, and social interaction — all strong motivations in pigs. However, poorly managed group housing creates new welfare problems through uncontrolled aggression at mixing. The key to successful group housing welfare is management quality: providing sufficient space (minimum 2.25 m2 per sow), electronic sow feeding stations that prevent food resource competition, visual barriers that allow subordinate animals to avoid dominant sows, and mixing protocols that minimize unfamiliar pig introduction into established groups. Well-managed group housing systems demonstrate lower chronic stress levels, better reproductive performance, and better behavioral welfare than gestation stalls while achieving the elimination of the most severe confinement welfare harm.
