Hippopotamus welfare in zoo settings depends fundamentally on water access quality. Pools that are too shallow for submersion prevent thermoregulation and natural resting behavior. Their skin desiccation without water access causes discomfort, and the blood sweat secretion that protects them outdoors is insufficient for prolonged dry conditions. Social management is complex since their natural social system involves aggregations that require large pools with adequate space for multiple animals to coexist without dominant male aggression reaching lethal levels. Zoo hippos tend to be more visible during daytime than their nocturnal wild counterparts, which may mean their visible behavioral repertoire underrepresents natural activity. Enrichment should support their aquatic preferences through submerged feeding opportunities and water depth variation. The endangered status of hippos and their role as ecosystem engineers (their dung fertilizes river ecosystems) make welfare-conscious zoo populations important conservation assets.
