Salmon crowding in commercial net pens creates social stress that compounds other welfare challenges including lice, disease, and water quality issues. Dominant fish in high-density environments monopolize feeding stations and optimal current positions, leaving subordinate fish chronically nutritionally stressed and excluded from preferred water quality zones. Fin erosion from physical contact and aggression increases as density rises, with dorsal and caudal fin damage serving as welfare indicators of excessive crowding. Reduced spatial heterogeneity in dense pens means fish cannot express the natural depth-related behavior patterns including surface feeding and deep water rest that they show when given space. Research indicates that densities below 15 kg/m3 produce measurably better welfare outcomes including lower fin damage, lower cortisol, and higher growth rates in subordinate fish. The economic argument that lower density requires more space is countered by improved feed conversion and lower disease incidence.
