Tilapia is one of the most farmed fish globally, with welfare conditions varying enormously between intensive and extensive production systems.
Tilapia welfare is often dismissed on the assumption that their stress tolerance means they do not suffer in poor conditions. This reasoning conflates survival capacity with absence of welfare impact. While tilapia can survive conditions that would kill salmon, they still show measurable stress responses including cortisol elevation, immune suppression, behavioral changes, and fin damage at high crowding densities that indicate welfare compromise. The social hierarchy of tilapia means that high-density crowding disrupts natural territorial behavior, creating chronic social stress in subordinate individuals. Hormonal sex reversal through methyltestosterone-treated feed to produce all-male populations raises its own welfare considerations since the treatment period itself causes hormonal disruption. Minimum welfare standards for tilapia including maximum stocking densities, water quality targets, and humane slaughter methods are beginning to be incorporated into certification schemes as the evidence base for tilapia welfare develops.
