Wild animal welfare raises profound philosophical and practical questions that animal welfare science is only beginning to address systematically. The dominant conservation paradigm focuses on species populations and ecosystem health, which may not track individual animal welfare. A thriving predator population may indicate ecosystem health while simultaneously meaning that prey animals experience frequent violent death. The emergence of welfare biology as a distinct academic field reflects growing recognition that individual wild animal welfare deserves consideration alongside population conservation. Practical interventions for wild animal welfare already exist in some forms: wildlife disease vaccination programs (rabies vaccination of raccoons, canine distemper vaccination in African wild dogs) reduce disease suffering, wildlife crossing structures reduce road mortality and its associated acute trauma, and fertility control reduces the chronic suffering of populations that exceed carrying capacity and face starvation. The challenge is developing a framework for thinking about wild animal welfare that is scientifically rigorous and practically useful.
