Sweet itch causes severe, persistent pruritus (itching) that drives horses to rub their skin raw, sometimes causing serious wounds and secondary infections. The chronic nature of the condition means affected horses suffer recurring seasonal distress without resolution unless actively managed. Many owners underestimate the intensity of the itch, which can dominate the horse experience during midge season. Welfare-conscious management involves early intervention before severe self-trauma occurs, including protective rugs during high-midge periods, topical treatments, and in severe cases veterinary medication.
