Parasite management directly affects horse welfare through two pathways. Inadequate control allows significant parasite burdens that cause colic, weight loss, poor body condition, diarrhea, and in severe cases intestinal obstruction from larval cyathostominosis — a life-threatening condition involving mass emergence of encysted larvae. Conversely, excessive anthelmintic use that drives resistance compromises future ability to control parasites effectively, potentially creating worse welfare problems in future horse populations. Targeted selective treatment preserves drug efficacy for horses that genuinely need treatment while reducing unnecessary drug exposure in horses whose immune systems maintain adequate parasite control. This evidence-based approach simultaneously optimizes individual horse welfare through appropriate treatment and population-level welfare by preserving treatment options.
