New technologies including camera traps, acoustic monitoring, environmental DNA, and satellite tracking are transforming wildlife conservation by enabling non-invasive population monitoring that reduces welfare impacts on studied animals.
Wildlife monitoring technology represents a welfare advance for studied animals by reducing or eliminating the capture and handling previously required for population monitoring and behavioral research. Traditional survey methods including live trapping, mark-recapture, and physical monitoring required individual animal capture that caused acute stress, potential injury, and occasionally mortality. Non-invasive technologies provide equivalent or superior ecological data without these welfare costs. The shift toward non-invasive monitoring also enables study of shyer species that avoid traps and reduces selection bias in studies that previously captured only trappable individuals. As these technologies become more affordable and widely adopted, the welfare benefit extends across hundreds of research programs worldwide. Supporting the development and adoption of non-invasive monitoring tools is simultaneously a welfare and conservation investment.
