Welfare monitoring technology represents a potential transformation in how pig welfare is assessed in commercial settings. The fundamental challenge of monitoring thousands of individual pigs for welfare indicators in real time — which is impossible for human observers — becomes tractable with computer vision and acoustic monitoring systems. Early detection of tail biting, lameness, or illness allows intervention before welfare compromise becomes severe or spreads through groups. The welfare benefit of early detection is significant: tail biting caught early can be interrupted before major injuries occur; lame pigs identified early can be treated before lameness becomes severe and chronic. Technology adoption requires investment and technical infrastructure that many producers lack, but the combination of welfare benefit and production performance benefit (early illness detection reducing mortality) creates an economic case alongside the welfare case for adoption.
