Hoof abscesses are a leading cause of sudden severe lameness in horses and while painful, they respond well to prompt treatment and appropriate aftercare.
The pain of a hoof abscess is severe and often overlooked as a cause of suffering in horses. The rigid hoof capsule allows pressure to build rapidly from infection, creating intense throbbing pain that intensifies with weight bearing. Horses may sweat, shake, and be reluctant to move at all. Because the diagnosis is often made by owners or farriers rather than veterinarians, treatment delays are common, extending the period of suffering unnecessarily. Cold hosing provides temporary relief through vasoconstriction, but definitive treatment requires drainage of the abscess. Proper nutrition, regular farriery, and hoof care to prevent white line disease and cracks substantially reduces abscess frequency and associated suffering.
